If Your Baby Has to Leave Kaweah Delta

Depending on how premature a child is at birth and whether there are other complications, it may be necessary for your baby to be transferred to another hospital.
Sometimes infants require emergent transports due to acute medical or surgical needs. Other times a scheduled transfer may be necessary as a part of continuing care, or to see a certain specialist.
During transport, Kaweah’s team or the receiving hospital’s team will accompany your baby.
The transport team consists of practitioners who are specially trained in the management and transport of newborns.
You will receive information about the receiving hospital and its location.

Returning

Having your baby transferred to another facility can be very hard on families.
Talk with your baby’s doctors about returning to Kaweah Delta as soon as your baby is finished with his or her treatment.

Taking Your Baby Home
Things Your Baby Must Do Before Making That Exciting Move Home:

Maintain a normal body temperature in an open crib.
Take in an adequate number of calories on all breast and/or bottle feedings.
Have consistent weight gain on all breast or bottle feeding.
Have no apnea (pauses in breathing) causing slow heart rate (bradycardia) or change in color for at least 5-7 days.
Most babies no longer need oxygen when discharged, but some infants may need it when going home.
